The Siamese is one of the oldest and best known cat breeds. The beautiful light-colored cat with the striking color points in seal, lilac, chocolate and blue made his Western Hemisphere debut in Victorian England, where he was touted as the Royal Cat of Siam, what we now call Thailand. He has been beloved ever since by people who appreciate his good looks and engaging personality.
The Siamese comes in two types: show and traditional. The show Siamese is a work of modern art, all lines and angles. He has a tubular body on long legs, a wedge-shaped head with large, triangular ears, and a long tail. The traditional Siamese, also known as the apple-headed Siamese, has a rounded head and chunky body. Both types have bright blue eyes that demand the worship due to all cats. Whether you choose a show Siamese or a traditional Siamese, they should share the same wonderful personality.
Siamese cats want to be with you. They want to share your time, your computer, your dinner, your hobbies – anything that keeps them in your company. They will greet you at the door when you come home. They often like fetching balls and are happy to be leash-trained so they can go for walks with you. They will cuddle up with you to watch Netflix and they will actually watch the show. Siamese cats adapt to your routine but can amuse themselves when the situation calls for it. This is not a cat you want if you are used to being ignored and dismissed by your feline companion.
The Siamese or “Meezer” loves people of all ages, including children, and asks only that you spend a lot of time with him, talk to him, play with him and just generally keep him entertained. He likes to be the center of attention, but he gets along well with dogs and other cats. In fact, it’s a good idea to have a second Siamese or other animal to keep him company if you will be gone during the day.
The other thing Siamese cats are known for are their voices. Our experience suggests that while a Siamese can be a very vocal cat, they tend not to be. Make no mistake about it, if your Siamese wishes to be heard, he will be heard! We, however, have not had a Siamese that talked all day long. Our Siamese cats chirp at each other and the kittens; our boy sometimes sings for a few minutes at bedtime and our girl only meows when she is trying to locate a missing kitten. Otherwise, she is generally very quiet.
